While attending Atlanta’s Portfolio Center, I realized my passion for logos. The challenge of distilling information to it’s simplest, immediate, and emotional form is one of my favorite aspects of graphic design. Logo design more than satisfies that need.

First – Jimmy Maddox

Jimmy Maddox was a neighbor and a boogie-woogie piano player, with Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis as major influences. He wanted a logo which would translate thumbnail-size in black and white on the back of his cassette.

Playing off the black and white piano keys, the font is tall, bold, and condensed. And the old-style piano illustration nods to the early roots of this musical genre. To provide the necessary tension, the piano teeters on the edge from all the pounding!

This may be my first logo design, working directly with a client.

Favorite – Coordinators2

Coordinators2 is both an agency and resource for before, during and after an adoption. The 2 refers to the 2 founders.

The butterfly is a symbol of hope and growth, with hearts representing the 2 wings—working together, helping the butterfly to soar. The small 2 acts as an exponent, adding strength to their name.

Eric Knight did a pencil sketch of the butterfly and I then drew it in Illustrator.
This has remained a favorite. Partly because it’s positive and uplifting and partly because there are so many layers of symbolism, yet it’s a very simple graphic.
